Downdetector reports Netflix is back online for most U.S. users after a six-hour outage.
A six-hour outage that took down service for many users across the United States has ended for Netflix, the popular video streaming platform. The outage, which began on Friday night, enraged viewers who wanted to tune in to watch the much-anticipated boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul. The draw of Jake Paul’s win sparked a huge spike in viewership during the game.
According to outage-tracing site Downdetector.com, more than 90,000 user reports were logged of issues accessing Netflix at its peak of disruption. By early Saturday morning, the problem had largely been resolved, with fewer than 100 reports still lingering by 5 a.m. ET (10:00 GMT).
So far, Netflix hasn’t commented on the outage, and users don’t know what caused it. But it isn’t the first time the platform has had problems with the technical side at big traffic events. In a similar move, viewers complained when the hit dating reality show Love is Blind streamed live in April 2023.
While Netflix continues to explore live events, outages will expose why it’s so hard to scale infrastructure to meet spikes in demand.
